The small Theatre was formed in late 1996 by a group of
young, energetic and passion-driven performers; each armed with a wealth
of experience from past involvement in the local arts scene.
Embodying the spirit of putting a voice through its
actors on stage, The small Theatre has, with its 3 productions thus far,
created a playing field that will define future endeavours for the group
in years to come.
The small Theatre firmly believes in value
entertainment in all its works; a quality that is due to be given renewed
attention. Marketing manoeuvres & big budgets accompanying big names
seem to be the call of late; and many are still striving to better each
other in this respect. Instead, The small Theatre chooses to focus its
creativity on the basics of what drew audiences in the first place- the
telling of a great story on stage.
In fact, the group has earned itself the unofficial
title: "Giordano
of the theatre scene" with its continual emphasis on
affordable theatre to the masses.
A reviewer of the Lianhe Zaobao was also suitably
impressed to name the group as one to watch in the near future.
The number of groups contributing to the arts scene in
Singapore is growing by the year. This can only do a small nation like us
good. With this vibrancy in mind, The small Theatre will continue to add
variety and differences to the explorations and subsequent interpretations
of life- the sole subject for any work of art, around us.
Our Objectives
1. We
are a bilingual theatre which forms a centre of work particularly
accessible to students + young people. The theatre company's programme is
to include the classics, new plays, experimental theatre + educational
work.
2.
From there, we wish to
devote our efforts towards creating adventurous theatre in order to
develop a wide-ranging audience of all ages + background but ultimately
concentrating on producing work for younger audiences.
3. Besides playing a
developmental role in play-making, we hope to further take upon an
inspirational + consciousness-raising role in creating awareness of the
Arts in Singapore.
4.
Above all, The small
Theatre's stated purpose is to act as a vehicle in offering unique
opportunities for exploration of not only intimate, but also spontaneous
ensemble performance + the imaginative use of space, light + sound.
5.
To bring affordable theatre
to the masses. We are a break-even organisation.
