June 1997 - The Genesis

Bucks was very funny. Okay, it's more than funny. But we're still
working on the article to describe to you how funny it is. Funny? Haha!
Kiddin'.
In June 1997, The small Theatre came together to put up
its first ever public performance. The main concept of the production was
to showcase the different styles of work each member of the theatre
possesses; and compile them into a collective performance.
We eventually came up with a production of various
short plays, presented by an ensemble cast that dealt with the various
aspects of our lives; namely, kinship, friendship, love, work and
religion.
In the treatment of these plays, we opted for a minimalist style of
approach; requiring the least number of props for each play, creating
certain distinct images in the process. It is our opinion that a better
feel would be created if these images are not embellished. The audience
enthusiastically embraced the “raw-ness” of this performance.
In our short plays, we were able to exhibit our
flexibility and sensitivity in portraying the various aspects of life.
Humour and sincerity were the main ingredients in all our performances.
And we were applauded for our innovations and brave new attempt at
defining what “entertainment” should be. Audience left the theatre
asking when the next show will be! Encouragement such as this spurred us
to produce our next show, Juz 8 Bucks.
