Association History and Purpose

Background (by Keith Roots): A long-time advisor to Theta approached me in March 2001 about a potential gift to support the chapter's service program. Working with a small group of alumni (Jeff Evans, Bill Haynie, Jennifer Milan, Jackson Moore, Jeanne Blackstock Moore, and David Wilkinson), we developed a proposal that was approved in September. The anonymous donor will donate $10,000, which must be matched with an additional $40,000. The matching funds must be raised by Theta's 75th anniversary, February 9, 2004. These funds will be placed in an alumni-controlled endowment trust and shall only be used to support Theta's service program. The chapter also is in agreement with this proposal.

Purpose: I see three purposes for the alumni association:

1. To gather for service and social events outside of pledge projects;
2. To work with the chapter to maintain an accurate alumni database;
3. To steward the service trust;
4. To inform alumni of important chapter events.

Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to call (home: 434-977-7870) or e-mail (kroots@virginia.edu). I look forward to seeing you at the first meeting. Thanks.
