- Why create an Alumni Association
now?
The Alumni Association was created to administer the Endowment Trust
Fund and to help reunite the more than 1,000 UVa alumni who are Brothers
in Theta Chapter.
The first goal became a necessity during the summer of 2001, when
a former advisor to Theta declared his intention of donating $10,000
for service to the Chapter and challenged fellow Theta Superbrothers
to match his gift two to one and endow the Chapter. The Association's
Board of Trustees will steward this trust fund to allow Theta Chapter
to expand the Chapter's service programs.
- How is the Alumni Association
organized?
Under the Association's Bylaws, there
are two groups of officers. The first group, the Association
officers, (the President, Secretary, Treasurer and Chapter Liaison)
are elected for two year terms. The main focus of this group of officers
is Alumni. The second group of officers, the Board
of Trustees, is primarily concerned with administering the Endowment.
These six members are elected with staggered terms.
Under the Bylaws Members may vote by proxy
sent by mail or e-mail or delivered or held by another Alumni Association
member at the meeting.
Membership is limited to alumni and advisors of Theta Chapter. Voting
in Alumni Association elections is limited to Superbrothers who pay
their dues, currently set at a paltry $10 year. (Endowment funds are
not used for the operations of the Alumni Assocation). Dues are necessary
to support the copying and mailings of the Alumni Association. Payment
of dues is encouraged. However, anyone may participate in Association
events, even if they have not paid dues.
- How often will there be service
projects?
Presently the Association is organizing two service projects a year.
At our very first service project Sarah Roberts (Fall '97, Theta 984)
and Kate Rhudy (Fall '99, Theta 1063) hosted more than forty Superbrothers
at the Capital Area
Food Bank at their warehouse in Northeast Washington, D.C. followed
by ice skating at the National Gallery ice rink.
The next project's information may be found here.
Of course, Superbrothers are encouraged to attend Theta Chapter's
pledge
projects, which has long been an informal reunion opportunity
for Theta Chapter Alumni.
- Where and how often will
the Alumni Association meet?
Meetings are in Charlottesville
twice a year, during Theta Chapter's pledge project weekend. Elections
are held at the fall meeting.
- Are there Association dues?
Yes, a meager $10 per year, mostly to cover postage and printing
expenses.
(Endowment funds are not used in the operations of the Alumni Association).
- How can I get involved?
For starters, check with the Superbrother
index and
click here to provide any corrections or updates.
Second, support Theta Chapter's Endowment. The fundraising goal
for the Association is $40,000, and we are almost half way there.
Your pledge will help secure the future of Theta Chapter's service
program for generations to come.
Third, pay dues and attend Association events.
Let us know if you are interested in helping organize a service or
social event.
