Lake County LUG
(Lake County Linux User Group)
"Linux is quite possibly the most important achievement of free software since the original Space War . . . " -- from Linux Installation and Getting Started.
Linux is a clone of the UNIX operating system that runs on Intel 32-bit processors (80386 and up). UNIX is one of the most popular operating systems worldwide because of its large support base and distribution. It is a multitasking, multiuser system originally developed for minicomputers and mainframes in the mid-1970's.
Linux was originally developed by Linus Torvalds at the University of Helsinki in Finland with the distribution of the first "official" version in October of 1991. What makes Linux so different is that it is a free implementation of UNIX. It is developed by a group of volunteers, on the Internet. Anyone is welcome to join in the Linux development effort.
Linux has developed into an operating system for business, education, and personal productivity. It is used as the operating system for everything from Personal Workstations for Desktop Publishing, Computer Aided Drawing, Program Development, Lab Workstations and Graphics to Web Servers and Network Servers. It supports a wide range of applications in just about every software catagory.
The Lake County Linux Users Group (LUG) is an informal group of Linux users that share information on the Linux operating system and its application.
LUG is open both for the experienced UNIX "Guru" and the new user, residing in Lake County California. We have no formal meetings or dues except for occasional gettogethers (posted on the "new" page) and most information is passed by e-mail of posted on this Web site. Please use the E-Mail form to contact the group for more information and don't forget to check out the "links" page for other sources of information.
