Overview
First Impressions
Kyle Rayner seems a perfectly normal twenty-something graphic designer. He may live in New York, but you should be able to spot the Californian accent. If your lucky or he's careless then you might even spot the unique jade coloured ring he wears. He's friendly enough to talk to and would seem more down to Earth than most of the other Leaguers. Don't let this fool you, over the last few years Kyle has matured rapidly as a hero. In combat he will demonstrate an inventiveness and flair unmatched by many previous Green Lanterns.
Brief
Before? Before there had been a Corps 3,600 strong, including the legendary Hal Jordan. But now? There is only one!
Kyle Rayner's life was dramatically transformed one night when he has handed the last Green Lantern Ring by Ganthet (last of the Guardians of the Universe). At that time Ganthet was weak after battling Parallax and only had enough energy to pass on the ring to a random owner before leaving this reality to heal. It could have been anybody that received that ring, but it wasn't. It was Kyle Rayner - freelance artist - that received the ring and his life would never be the same.
Kyle has grown both in stature within the metahuman community and also as a person, he is no longer the total rookie of the Justice League. Instead he is the first of a new generation of heroes including his friends Conner Hawke (Green Arrow II) and Curt Falconer (Aztek). Still awed by the icons that he finds himself in contact with, Rayner is more imaginative, less bound by tradition that any Oan powered Green Lantern ever.
Recent Developments
Kyle has been instrumental in a number of the League's more impressive victories including defeating Solaris and coordinating the League reservists during the Magaddon crisis. On a personal level his relationship with Jade is currently on hold. On a professional level he has just landed a job as the resident cartoonist for a new trendy magazine, an assignment that could well be his ticket into the big time.
Abilities
Kyle uses a Green Lantern Power Ring that allows him to create emerald constructs limited only by the scope of his willpower and imagination. Unlike previous versions this ring does not have a twenty-four hour time limit, instead it draws a limited charge off of a power battery and needs to be recharged once that charge is depleted. A limited telepathic connection allows him to sense how much charge is left in the ring.
Tactics
Kyle's tactics differ greatly from the traditional training given to members of the Green Lantern Corps. Everything he's learned has had to have been worked out in the heat of battle. Typically Kyle will rely on images from comic-books or television (i.e. Manga robots and jet-fighters). Examples of Kyle constructs are giant safes to contain supernovae, pirate galleons to carry teammates and emerald Doppelgangers of dead Green Lanterns to take on multiple attackers.
Relationships
Connections
The Leaguer closest to Kyle's own age is the Flash, but their relationship can be strained at times. Wally regards Kyle as inexperienced while Kyle regards Wally as arrogant. Fortunately their rivalry is mainly good natured and they actually work well as a team. Kyle is still awed by the other Leaguers and is mostly terrified of the Batman. The Martian Manhunter sometimes trains with Kyle and will often push him harder than the others. Kyle was responsible for nominating Aztek and Green Arrow (Conner Hawke) for League membership.
Allies
Troia (Donna Troy - were a couple for a long time but are currently separated), Jade (Jennie-Lynn Hayden - daughter of Alan Scott, she stood in for Kyle as Green Lantern while he was in deep space), Sentinel (Alan Scott - the original Golden Age Green Lantern and the closest thing Kyle has to a mentor).
Enemies
Doctor Light (long time for of Hal Jordan - fought the JLA as part of the Injustice Gang), Garvyn? (illegitimate son of Darkseid - tried to impress his father but was vanquished by Green Lantern)
