Membership Update Form |
N.B. This form now uses a cgi script from the free Response-O-Matic service. The page you will see after submitting your form is generated by R-O-M and I have only limited ability to change its content and formatting. If you don't like it, find me a form-to-email cgi and a server admin who will allow us access to his cgi-bin directory, and you can change the form to use the new cgi. :-) Seriously, though, once we get this on the official SCL server, if we can host the cgi there and someone finds/writes a cgi we can use, I'll be glad to change over to it, provided we can get it to do what we want.
This change was necessitated by the fact that probably 75-80% of the browsers out there today handle mailto forms incorrectly. Of the browsers we've tested, only 3.x versions of Netscape Navigator, 4.x versions of Netscape's full Communicator suite, and iCab handle mailto forms properly. That means everyone using MSIE, standalone Navigator 4.x, or some other browser I've never heard of, couldn't use this form, and neither could people who don't have a SMTP server (I think all AOL users are in this situation, as are most of the users of web-based email (Yahoo!, Hotmail, et cetera) or don't have their SMTP server configured properly in their browser. This stacks the odds way too far against us for the form to be really useful. If only people using OmniWeb (which we haven't tested, actually) couldn't get it to work, that might be acceptable. But it the latest versions of the most common browsers won't workthat's a problem.
Sorry for the long-winded explanation. Please send me an email saying that you've filled out the form and also containing the the browser info line. If all works well this time around, the form will be "officially" on-line soon, and I'll also delete the pre-existing text to make it easier for everyone to enter data. Thanks!
