The Danish Royal Family

Why don't we start with a little bit of official information....

Denmark is one of the oldest monarchies in the world. The first Danish king to be recorded was Hardeknud, back in 934. However, no other piece of information about him than his name has been saved for posterity. Hardeknud's successor was Gorm the Old who is also a fairly unknown figure. At any rate it is known that he died in 940, and from his son and successor Harold Bluetooth who ruled from 940 986, we know the names as well as the exact years of reign of all kings and queens of Denmark- 53 altogether. You can investigate more yourself on the official royal homepage .

Enough history; let's jump directly to the present royal family. Denmark has been "ruled" by Queen Margrethe the Second Alexandrine Thorhildur Ingrid (not exactly a common Danish name) since 1972. She is married to Prince Henrik whose original name (check this out) Henri-Marie-Jean-André de Larborde de Monpezat. That's not a Danish name at all, he is actually of French origin.

Ready to meet them? Here they are:

Queen Margrethe II

Prince Henrik

They have two sons, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim. Joachim is already married and all set with Princess Alexandra from Hong Kong. She is a beautiful girl, but poor her, the press is screaming for a kid. But, so far she and Joachim remains a two people family. Frederik is still a bachelor. No pictures os them, so far, but I am doing my best to get some.

Queen Margrethe, Prince Henrik and Prince Frederik the Bachelor all live in a very nice castle, Amalienborg, situated by the harbourfront in downtown Copenhagen. The central square of the castle is public and a nice place for stroll:

That's it on the royal family. Exept for the dirty gossip, off course...
