The Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru (Johor
Bahru City Council) became the first local council in the country to introduce
cleanliness ratings to all food and drink outlets within it's area of jurisdiction.
Every outlets in the city, including those road-side
stalls, are repeatedly given cleanliness test by the council's officials to ensure
cleanliness. After the checks, the food outlets' operators are given ratings ranging
from A, the cleanest to E, the dirtiest. They are also issued rating stickers which
they are compounded by law to stick somewhere noticeable within their premises to show
their customers what their rating is.
Whichever outlets scored an E for the cleanliness rating,
it is ordered by the council to stop it's business operation for two weeks in order to
learn how to keep their place clean. When the outlet reopens two weeks later, the
officials will check the place and give the rating again.
Majority of the food outlets scored B during various checks
by the council's officials.
