Amenities and Facilities |
There is a wide-range of amenities and related services and
facilities available in the metropolitan region, particularly in Johor Bahru City.
There are various hospitals, both private and government-operated,
within the metropolitan. The Sultanah Aminah General Hospital in Johor Bahru City is
the principal hospital in the state. There are currently three major private
hospitals and medical centres. Polyclinics and clinics are available throughout the
metropolitan region.

Johor Bahru boosts a wide range of
educational institutions. There is a Japanese School and an International School to
cater to the needs of expatriates' children. There is also a few private schools,
numerous public or government-funded school, technical institutions, colleges,
polytechnics and Malaysia's second most-sought-after university, Universiti Teknologi
Malaysia (University of Technology, Malaysia).
Presently, there are
four stadiums in the metropolitan area. They are the Larkin Stadium, the Majlis
Bandaraya Johor Bahru Swimming Complex, Johor Bahru Indoor Stadium and Pasir Gudang's
Corporate Stadium.
Additionally, there are various community halls
located all over the metropolitan region for recreational, exhibition or various other
uses. The government is now planning to build a Sports City in Kulai, a suburb of
Johor Bahru City. The Sports City will have 5 stadiums, a hotel and some training
facilities.
The city also boost a few notable public parks and gardens.
Among the larger ones are the Taman Ria Bukit Chagar (Bukit Chagar Playground), a
very big playground situated within the City Centre and very popular among children
owing to it's cartoon-theme, the Grand Palace Garden, Hutan Bandar (Urban Forest),
Pantai Lido (Lido Beach), Linear Garden, which stretches approximately 2
kilometres along the Skudai Highway, Stulang Laut, a recreational area with a waterfront
promenade, park and beach and Puteri Lagoon, a new generation of public parks built by the
City Council and the State Government which aimed at incorporating elements of culture,
tradition and leisure.

Shopping is one of the best thing to do in
the city, for the tourism promotion board is promoting Johor Bahru as your ultimate
shopping destination. From road-side shopping at the pasar malam (night
market) or pasar petani (farmer's market) to those big and modern shopping
malls and complexes.
Pasar malam is being held at the same place once
a week during the evening. There are several pasar malam sessions in the city and
the price of goods are bargain-able. As for pasar petani, it's also held once every
week at the same location. The sellers at the pasar petani are all farmers and so,
the goods there are all fresh and cheap.
Plaza Angsana, Plaza Pelangi, Holiday Plaza, Pacific Mall, Pelangi
Leisure Mall and ZON Johor Bahru Duty Free Complex are the most sought-after retail and
entertainment complexes in the city. They offer a wide-range of goods and services.
Currently, there are 18 shopping complexes in the metropolitan area with at least 16 more
under-construction.
Hypermarkets are a popular shopping venue for
the shoppers too. There are three hypermarkets operating within the metropolitan
region, with Carrefour, a French hypermarket, being the most successful and popular.

For the racing enthusiasts, the Johor Racing
Circuit provides a world-class venue for international racing events such as the World
Superbike, World Endurance and the Johor Race Series.
Starting recently,
Johor Bahru City has hosted a few international sporting events such as the World Youth
Cup 1997 and the World Cup Qualifying Match between Japan and Iran for World Cup 1998.
There are currently 23 golf-courses in the State of Johor, making
it the ultimate golfers' paradise in the South-East Asian region. These golf-courses offer
different stages of challenges for golfers. Most of the golf-courses too, offer full
club-house facilities such as tennis court, jogging track, gymnasium and snooker centres.
The courses ranges from 9-hole to 72-hole courses. Some golf-courses offer accommodation
facilities as well.
Eating out in Johor Bahru City is always
enjoyable because you can obtain a wide variety of local and international dishes at
reasonable prices. Not-to-be-missed local dishes are Bak-Kut-Teh (Chinese pork soup
with rice and tea), Ice Kacang (local fruit and ice cocktail) and Ikan
Bakar (grilled fish).
Johor Bahru City is
said to come alive with the setting of sun. Its vibrant nightlife provides lively
entertainment to match your mood. Most of the night-spots are located in the City
Centre and Taman Sentosa (Sentosa housing estate). |
