East Flores is hilly land, covering a
narrow strip of 20 Kms long. Arid grasslands dominate the
lanscape.
Larantuka
Is the capital of East Flores regency, the
island's eastern-most regency. Formerly, it was called Tanjung
Bunga (Cape of Flower), which in the Portuguese language
became Cabo da Flores (Flora), a name which eventually applied to
the whole island.
This small town is located on the coast and
still bears the imprints of its Purtuguese heritage. The
portuguese legacy is found in people's names, rituals, church
architecture, church paraphernalia, as well as in famous old fort
of Solor Island.
Asmara Lake
It is suitable for recreation, 24 Kms from
Larantuka, can be reached by car or motorbike. A fresh water lake
surrounded by the rock, banana and bamboo plants
San Dominggo
is the hill where the Cathedral, the
Bishop's house and the Mission complex are located. From the hill
one can see accross the beach of Ketapang, near Larantuka.
It is a beautiful beach, and largely still unspoiled. There is a
training institution for fishermen, run by the Dioces of
Larantuka. There is also sulfuric hot-water pool in the Village
of Karum, in the Atadei district. Children use
the hot water to cook sweet potatoes or boil eggs.
Heras Beach
The place can be reached in about 45
minutes from Larantuka. The beach is unspoiled and
unpolluted. The center of fishermen's vocational training run by
Dioces in Larantuka is found here. There is also Krung
village, in atadei district, where one can find a
sulfurous spring.
Kawaliwu
A beautiful beach, suitable for recreation.
It is equal to one in Maumere. Kawaliwu is also known
for its historic objects kept in the houses. It is 18 Kms from
Larantuka,and accessible by car and motorbike.
Jontona
A place of ritual ceremonies, demonstration
of traditional weaving process. There you can also find the
unique fair. It is situated in Lembata island, one hour
from Larantuka. The suitable motor cruises are available.
There are 3 more islands that part of East Flores Regency. They are:
Lembata Island is an island rich in
traditional culture. The men are brave sailors, and skilled
whalers.
Held between May and September, the whaling
season offers the greatest spectacle, the area has to offer.
Armed with only simple metal-tipped spears as harpoons, they set
out in their simple boats to go after the whales.
Lamalera on Lembata island is a whaling
village. The months of May to September make up the whale hunting
season for the people of Lamalera.
Using simple traditional tools, small row
boats called Paledang, and the hand-thrown harpoons, the
hunters sail out to hunt these giant creatures of the sea. The
catch is either consumed or sold.
ADONARA ISLAND
There is an old portuguese fort, build up
of soil, clay and rocky materials. There are also the old cannons
there, beside of the copper and stone statues.
