Sikka was a kingdom in the past, but now
it's a regency. The capital is Maumere, on Maumere Bay on the
north coast of Flores. The town can be reached by air from
Denpasar (Bali), Kupang, and Ujung Pandang.
Maumere
A port town on the northeastern coast of
Flores and stopover on the way to Ende, Denpasar or Ujung
Pandang. It's noted for it's good beaches. The bay of Maumere,
Waiara -- 12 Kms from Maumere, is considered the best diving spot
(Flores Marine Resort) as it promise extremely rich marine life.
The resort is paradise for all divers, underwater photographers,
and for anyone interested in marine biology. It is a place of
international event of diving and fishing whiche attracts
proffesionals from everywhere. Suitable facilities, cottages,
hotels, bars and restaurants are available, including the
equipment of water sports.
It has a beautiful sea garden filled with
corals and fish. So does Koka, nearby. Accomodation and
facilities for recreation are available.
Bare mountains and hills dominated the
landscape. Today a reforestation program has turned large parts
into green pastures. A prehistoric bronze boat from the Dongsong
era, called Dobo or Boabatung is found in a village near Maumere,
where it is carefully kept by the people as an ancestral
hairloom.
Waiara
A beautiful beach and sea garden, home of
thousands of fish species, 12 Kms from Maumere. 1,200 species of
fish are recorded living there. It is a place international event
of diving and fishing which attracts the professionals from
everywhere. Suitable facilities, cottages, hotels, bars and
restaurants are available, including the equipment of water
sport.
Dobo
A Village with its unique archaeologic
bronze boat, Jong Dobo / Jong Gelang as named by the local
people. There you can find that the people express their unusual
experiences related to the boat. Dobo is good for taking rest and
camping.
Blikon Blewut Museum
It is 9 Kms from Maumere to the west. Mini
buses are available everyday. The museum keeps so many wonderful
cultural objects and fossils. Stegodon fossil (Stegodon
Florensis), estimated as derived from 300,000 years ago.
Mt Rokatenda
A vulcano in Palue island in front of
Maumere. There you can find the unique village of the fishermen.
