Pohorje is a large mountain range in the northeast of Slovenia. It is not very high, the highest point is just
slightly over 1500 meters, and there are no spectacular vertical peaks like in the Alps, but there are
endless forests, lovely streams, lakes and waterfalls and lots of fresh air. It's got some of the best ski
resorts in the country, for both alpine and cross-country skiing. Pohorje is easily accessible in summer and in
winter. Many important towns are located in proximity, like Maribor, the second largest city in the country,
Celje, which is the third largest, Velenje and Slovenj Gradec. Actually, I live at the base of
Pohorje as well, in a little town named Konjice.
Rogla is a well known ski resort, but it is beautiful also in summer. The highest point of Rogla is at 1517
meters, which qualifies it among the highest points of Pohorje. There's an observation tower at this point
with great views. In very clear weather, Triglav can be seen, although it's more than 100 kilometers away.
When I was a kid, I was skiing at Rogla a lot. At that time, it was far less
visited and with only a few ski lifts but over the years it transformed into one of the largest ski resorts
in Slovenia. The picture shows Brigita having fun in the forests of Rogla.
The Black Lake is located at the half way from Mariborsko Pohorje to Rogla. It is a great spot and it's very popular
for picknicking. Brigita and I visit it often; it's only 30 minutes away from our home.
On the picture you can see the Black Lake, Meggy and myself.
The lake freezes in winter so Meggy and me can have more fun.
On the northwestern side, there's Ribnisko Pohorje with the two highest points, Crni vrh and Jezerski vrh. This area
is one of my favourites, because it's usually a bit less crowded than Rogla and Mariborsko Pohorje. A little lake is
located in proximity. A hike from Ribnisko Pohorje to Rogla is excellent and can be done in approximatelly three hours.
At nearly the half way from Ribnisko Pohorje to Rogla, there is a very special place: a bunch of tiny lakes, the
Lovrenska Jezera. There are around thirty of them. A large wooden tower is located close to the lakes
with a great view accross them.
