Prime Real Estate: The Egret rookery at Great Captains Island

Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets and Black Crowned Night Herons know where to look around for housing

They have their largest rookery at Great Captains Island, off the coast of Greenwich CT and about 35 miles from Times Square, NYC. On a clear day you are able to see the skyscrapers of Manhattan from the rookery.

But seriously, the real reason these birds came to Greenwich is not the view, but the island is one of the few remaining suitable habitats in the sound to support a rookery. I could go on an on about the attributes of the island as an Egret habitat, but this is supposed to be a fun page :-) maybe later..

The birds show up from their wintering grounds in Central America around April, and hang around raising their chicks until late summer. Thisis a view of Great Egrets, from the highest point of the island looking towards Greenwich

thisis a view of the island towards the right

and that's moi at work with "Santa Clos"
