The French Huguenots who arrived from 1688 onwards and who settled mainly in the Franschhoek (French Corner) Valley contributed their sophisticated skills by refining the production of wine. Vineyards in the Hexrivier Valley It is said that Napoleon Bonaparte while languishing in a prison cell in St Helena was reported to be longing for the sweet wines of Constantia as these wines had been extremely well received in the French Court. The wines, Sherries, brandy and ports produced in the Cape are among the finest in the world. Visitors to the Wine Routes can go on 'Wine Tours' which takes you from the one Wine estate to the other where the visitor can either taste and buy wine, or enjoy a peaceful farm meal in the country side, or embark on guided tours that tells the story of the wine making process. A great family outing which offers something for everyone.
