The story of this "City of Gold" is one of dreams of the men who discovered gold in this outcrop of the main reef and the determination of a nation to mine this precious metal. This is the capitol city of the province Gauteng which means "Place of Gold". This is one gold mining town that decline into a ghost town, but instead turned into the largest city in the country, and the economic heartland of a nation. This is the home of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the pioneering themepark museum of Gold Reef City, the tranquility of Joubert Park and it's art gallery, the Strijdom- and SABC towers - all landmarks of this metropolis.
In spite of areas of growing industry and commerce it is well served with green belt areas like the zoo-lake, parks, golf courses, horse racing and the Kyalami motor race track. The city also has some fine sporting venues like the Ellispark Rugby Stadium, FNB Soccer stadium in Soweto and the Johannesburg Athletics Arena. These stadiums are not only home to international sporting events, but also hosted many big concerts of international super stars.
Gold Reef City is a splendid reminder of the pioneering days of the early gold miners of the area seeking fortune and happiness. This theme park with it's Victorian buildings, old style shops and hotels has tribal dancing displays, a water world attraction, can-can girls in a typical miners' tavern, and steam train rides. Visitors can also go down in one of the mineshafts and experience first hand what it's like to work deep beneath the earth.
