How to get to Skiathos. There are up to five flights daily from Athens (45 min.) as well as the numerous charter flights from northern Europe. Skiathos can be reached by either expensive ferryboat (3 to 4 daily - 3 hours) or even more expensive hydrofoil (75 min.) from Volos or Ag. Konstandinos. Fares are almost double those on Cyclades or Dodecanese lines. There are also one or two ferries a week from Kimi (5 hours).

Accommodation. Try to arrive in the off season. Because of Skiathos's immense popularity most hotels now require reservations for July and August. Visitors outnumber islanders 10 to1 during the high season! Well-kept private rooms (dolmatia) are your best bet. Room owners await ferry arrivals, offering their villas or studios. Compared to most other Greek islands, everything is expensive. The true low-budget traveller will have a hard time on Skiathos. Check out  www.skiathosinfo.com. Geof could find you a good deal.

Typical Skiathos studios

The island has four camp sites. Lazos Camping is at Kolios, 7 km west of Skiathos Town. Xanemos Camping is within walking distance of the town, close to the airport so it suffers from noise. Camping Aselinos is on the north coast, near one of the nicer (though windy) beaches. Koukounaries Camping, near the beautiful sandy bay, seems to be the best choice.

Getting around. Every half hour, between 7.30 am and 10.30 pm, a crowded bus runs along the 12 kilometres of road on the south coast, stopping at all the access points to the beaches. A short spur to Aselinos beach and the short route to the airport are the island's only other paved roads. But there's no reason not to explore some of the northern beaches at the end of dirt tracks, either by hired scooter or jeep. Taxis queue along the waterfront. The north coast beaches are most easily reached by excursion boats (kaiki). Some excursion boats do around-the-island trips, stopping at Kastro, northern caves, Lalaria and Koukounaries beaches.
