Eating on a budget in Skiathos Town poses a challenge: prices vary widely, usually from expensive to outrageous. The only cheap alternatives are the gyros/tiropita stands which line Papadiamanti and the lanes around it. One of the best fast-food and souvlaki places is Stavros, gyros & souvlaki stand in Trion Ierarchion Square. There are several tavernas on the waterfront. Taverna Ouzeri Kampoureli is a very pleasant place. Try their fried feta (white goat's cheese). At Carnayio, grilled fish is well prepared and graciously served. Taverna Limanakia serves delicious food in a comfortable environment. I loved their fantastic taramosalata. Le Bistrot, above and to the west of Trion Ierarchon Square, is a friendly restaurant with continental cuisine. Alexanders has excellent chicken dishes and the management is friendly and helpful. Taverna Stamatis has delicious kalamarakia (fried baby squid) and excellent salads. One of the best-known eateries is Taverna Asprolithos, at the corner of Mavroghiali and Korai Streets. It serves fresh fish and the best saganaki (fried cheese) I ever tasted. Polikratis, at the end of Papadiamanti, has live Greek music. Try grilled lamb cooked on "their special barbecue". Just off Papadiamandi is Tsaprouni's, a friendly taverna with a good atmosphere. Mouria Taverna, located off Papadiamandi, behind the National Bank, is a popular place with reasonable prices. Papadiamantis would often visit to have a glass, or few, of his favourite moschato wine, claim the owners. Now you have the opportunity to taste this locally produced wine. When in Greece, you should eat Greek food. However, should you have a craving for non-Greek food, there is Italian at La Piazza, up the steps at the end of the harbour. The Lemon Tree English/Indian restaurant has vegetarian food and excellent (albeit expensive) curries. Chez Julien has French food and Garden of the East Chinese. CommentsLisa Olstad, Norway: We agree on which tavernas are the best ones! But LA PIAZZA is no longer there (or no longer a restaurant). At least not last summer. If I wrote the home page, I would also mention TAVERNA MESOGIA in the back streets behind the main church. It is in my opinion the closest you can get to the authentic Greek, even if quite a few tourists manage to find their way there. (The food is average, but OK). TO KALO PIGADI (The Good Well), between Asprolithos and the police station, leaning to the back wall of the high school, has the best small dishes in town! (But there were so few customers there last summer, that maybe they have given up now...) VARTHALAMIS (taverna and ouzeria), in a back street between the harbour and Papadimantis, is also one of my favourites. Maria and Johan Lunkar, Sweden: We have very much appreciated to look at your pages. However, we think that you have forgotten a few recommendations, about restaurants. An unfortunately rather expensive, but superb taverna named Statis near Kanapitsa...
