05/4/2005 - Invercargill to Milford Sound- Day 5

Today our aim is reaching Milford Sound, described by Rudyard Kipling as the ‘Eight wonder of the world'. The journey is quite far, approximately 300km. After breakfast, check-out from our room. We took some precious moments to shoot some photos as remembrances of this southernmost city. It is quite surprisingly elegant city with beautiful parks, streets, elegant buildings, museum, art gallery etc. However, just manage to walk about Dee St , Tay St and Clyde St. (Pic 05a).

We decided to take the quicker route across farmland to Gore. Then travel across the river plain to Lumsden. Later, pass by Mossburn before reaching Te Anau. On the way, we stopped shortly after unable to resist some beautiful scenic. Some of the highlight is long white wave beating the shore at McCracken's Rest. (Pic 05b) We also tempted by the river plain and farmland near Lumsden, it make the drive very refleshing (Pic 05c). When near Te Anau, the scenic change to picturesque Takitimu Mountains (Pic 05d).

Just before afternoon, we reached Te Anau, a township sits on the shores of Lake Te Anau. The environment here is very relaxing and calm. We took a tea-break here at a garden by the lake. Everyone have a stroll around the garden, aviary and lake. This is one of the peaceful place I ever been to and quite reluctant to leave (Pic 05e). Promise that I will be back!!

The journey from here to Milford is an unforgettable drives, no wonder it is consider on of New Zealand's most scenic drives. Initially, there is only mild farmland, then ease into beech forest near the entrance to the Fiordland National Park . Later, we see the Avenue of the Disappearing Mountain and the Mirror Lake . We tried hard to suppress our desired to stop on the way. Nevertheless, a few short moments is spent just to shot some spectacular views. (Pic 05f)

Check in at Milford Sound Lodge, went for the Milford Sound Tour. It included a boat trip thru the Sound (fiordland)to the sea, saw lots of waterfall, rainbow and awsome view.

On return, stop at an underwater observatory - submerge 9m, check out the community there. It was a strange world, odd looking creatures and unreal plants. The highlight, the black coral but appear in white<fungus>(Pic 05n). When the tour finished, we just walk around the beach and enjoy the sunset view, an unforgetable one indeed. (Pic 05o)

When it is totally dark, went back to cook for dinner... suddenly become very hungry.
