The southwest quadrant of the Avebury circle.
Avebury is one of those places that must have been very impressive at
one time, but progress has to an extent ruined it. That's not to say that
it isn't impressive now. It's just that it would be even more impressive
without the streets splitting it into quarters and the town filling up a
chunk of it. My suggestion would be to stand in the southern quadrants of
the circle and look south. There aren't any houses or buildings as far as
can be seen. Then, one gets the sense of how this place must have looked
when it was first built. A word of caution about Avebury: those parts of
the circle not covered with town are working pastures. Visitors wander amongst
the stones with the sheep and goats. As a result, pasture surprises are
everywhere. Watch where you step. There is not a charge to visit Avebury.
Also, take time to visit some of the other prehistoric sights, like Silbury
Hill, which are close to Avebury. In some ways, they are more impressive
than Avebury itself.
