Tasik Cermin: Quarry Threatens Pristine Beauty

The future of our beautiful karst (limestone) landscapes is bleak….unless something is done about it NOW. Read on.

Tasik Cermin ("Cermin" means Mirror, while "Tasik" means Lake) in Ipoh is surrounded by limestone hills. The lake is suitable for scuba diving, with a depth of more than 45 metres, as attested to by a group of divers who shot underwater footage recently to draw up the cave system (the New Straits Times, 16/12/97). Like a few other limestone hills which are slowly being damaged by blasting from quarries, the landscape at Tasik Cermin may be in danger.

At a time when tourism is expected to be a major revenue earner for the country, it is hoped that the Perak State Government will consider preserving our beautiful limestone caves as a gift to our children.
