Antoni Gaudí (1906-1910), was at the forefront of a new generation of inventive "Modernistas" architects, or Catalan modernists. Inspired by Art Nouveau, these "Modernism" buildings are characterized by sinuous, flowing lines, decorative artistry and adventurous combinations of materials like tile, glass, brick, iron and steel.

Nicknamed "La Pedrera" ("The Stone Quarry"), Gaudí 's Casa Mila is considered a masterpiece of Modernism. Situated in the L'Eixample (The Enlargement) district, it is surrounded by other works of the Modernistas, including buildings by Lluis Domènech i Montaner (1850-1923) and Josep Puig i Cadafalch (1867-1957).
