The British Mandate era
The British Mandate era

While the Turkish era was dominated by rapid design and development of Beer Sheva (1900 -1917), the British occupation period, 1917 until 1948 was symboled more in strongening and stabilizing the infrastructure of the city: roads, transportation, government administration, law enforcement, water supply and Sede-Teman air field. On the right side we can see General Alenby's arch.

The population was growing, new businesses were opened and urban area was tripled. At the beginning, the army’s’ presence was the main reason for the development and a lot of construction was going on including the ANZAC cemetery, the TIGRIS type army/police building and other government institutes. Later on, the civilian life took its course and the number of businesses was the largest in the country in one city. The weekly market of commodities was the main business event, and the city benefited from the visitors and traders from near by regions and countries.
