PERHENTIAN ISLAND

wondering wat's R&R? it's nothing more than da "Rest & Relax" & stress-free escapade most divers are looking 4... "Perhentian" simply means "Stop-Over" in Bahasa Malaysia, which is da official language in Malaysia... indicating an unstressful, unspoilt yet uncrowded tropical island...

sounds good? great... then i shall introduce some of da xcellent dive sites around da islands... Perhentian group comprises 2 main islands - Perhentian Besar (besar = 'big') & Perhentian Kecil (kecil = 'small')...

Terumbu Tiga (3 Brothers Rock) - Site 5 on da map - is da usual jumble of large boulders down to sand, but is teeming wif fish & when current is running, has some of the biggest soft corals can be found anywhere... da deeper rocks have fluted oysters & lots of large white gorgonian sea fans, weighed down wif wing oysters; there r oso many red harp corals & green Tubastrea micranthus corals, some wif their polyps out feeding during da day... down on da sand r huge soft tree corals, some black corals, small whip corals & various shells (including cowrie & volute)... barrel sponges wif alabaster sea cucumbers are most noticeable...

Tokong Laut (Temple of da Sea), Susu Dara (Virgin's Milk) - Site 15-17 - are considered da best off Perhentian islands... fish life is simply good & plentiful... different species of sea stars, cushion stars, sea cucumbers, nudibranchs & congregations of black sea urchins, parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, rabbitfish, pufferfish, jacks, trevallies, barracuda, moray eels, nurse sharks, triggerfish are common sights here... however if u like corals these are da less xciting sites...
