Working hard in Haiti

OK. My lifestory - condensed.

Born - 28 September 1957. So life is supposed to begin now, right? My hometown is Barnsley, England - an ex-coal mining town in the old heavy industrial region of South Yorkshire. Not really knowing what to do after school at age 16, I decided to join the army. Looking back on it, it was a good move. The army gave me a trade (Radio Technician), showed me a bit of the world (Cyprus and Germany) and made a man of me (what a fine job they did).
For all the good I got out of the army, at the ripe old age of 27 I'd had enough of that life and got a job in Saudi Arabia working for their airforce. Actually, life in Saudi was pretty much like army life, but this time I was being paid to be messed around. There I learned how to brew award-winning beer without malt. I've had more wild, drunken parties in that strict Islamic country than anywhere else in the world!
After 3 years of destroying my brain cells I left Saudi to spend a year in Australia as a full-time beach bum. Townsville Queensland is a great place to be as long as you don't need to earn a living. After the money began to run low I found a job with the United Nations Field Service as a part-time beach bum.
With the UN I've been to Israel, Namibia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia, Libya/Chad border and now Haiti. Places not usually on the tourist map. Eija and I met at a party in Afghanistan and we've been together ever since. We were married on 12 December 1997 in the Dominican Republic (photos on Eija's page).

Eija and I have been here in Haiti since October 1994 - wow, over five years. The mission's name has changed four times since that time. Originally it was United Nations Mission in Haiti (UNMIH). Then, after the Presidential Elections, we became United Nations Support Mission in Haiti (UNSMIH). Then the United Nations Transition Mission in Haiti (UNTMIH). Then we were the Mission de Police Civile des Nations Unies en Haiti (MIPONUH), and finally the Mission Civile d'Appui en Haiti (MICAH). We've had more names than Prince!
Haiti has it's problems as I'm sure you're aware. Garbage in the streets, only 10 hours of electricity a day, ineffective government etc, but over our time here we have seen things gradually improving, but there's still at lot do yet.

I bought an in-car minidisc/receiver from the company below over the internet. They provided great service and advice and I can whole-heartedly recommend them.
