Italy.

Rome. Ancient City.

September 1996.
You're approaching Rome and feel as your heart beats faster. Rome! The capital of Great Empire. The centre of catholic world and Italy. You drive along the road and know that this road was built about 2 thousand (or so) years ago. You see old bridge over Tiber and almost feel how cohorts of Romans go accross the river.

We started our trip from Vatican. Vatican is state inside the city. It has its own lows, people, money. Unlike other small countries situated inside other countries you really feel that you crossed state borders. It seems that even air in Vatican is different from other city. And it's really interesting to see St.Peter Cathedral from the other side. Its cupola looks much better from this point of view.

Vatican museum is thing you really have to see. Unlike many other museum it is "live". You may see modern statue next to antique one. There is one painting on the ceiling where director of museum added picture of photocamera because he liked photos.

The final point of Vatican museum is famous Sistine (Michelangelo) Chapel. Well known paintings on the ceiling and walls looks very clean despite of the fact they were painted a few centuries ago.

When you leave Museum and think that's all you can see in Vatican you came inside St.Peters Cathedral and understand that it's only the beginning! I have never seen cathedral that impressed me more than St.Peters Cathedral. It's very huge. There is entombment of St.Peter under cupola in the centre of Cathedral. The baldachin over entombment looks small but its height is about 30 meters.

Colosseo.
Arc of Constantine.
The Cathedral is live as Vatican itself. It is permanently reconstructing. This is the biggest catheral in the world as you know and there are names of other cathedral of the world written on the floor marking the length of them. Maybe next time I'll try to spend whole day in this cathedral.

Next day we started on Piazza Venezia. There is a huge monument of Vittorio Emanuele II. Most Romans don't like it because it ruined the view of Capitol Hill. We scaled to Capitol Hill by the long Michelangelo Stairs. It was not so easy ;-). The Capitol Hill is the centre of the city and the place where you can see central part of Rome from. There are ruins of Roman Forum lay besides the Capitol Hill. A few stones and columns this is all that remains from the place where Romans spent their lives.

The next great impression was of course Colosseo. When you see it for the first time you feel that all your dreams come true. The famous stadium you've seen on pictures read books about is standing right in front of you. It's really great to see tribunes where Emperors of Rome watched gladiator games, the arena where first Ñhristians were killed by Neron, the stairs where count Monte-Christo met his friends at night.

Rome is the city I may talk hours about. It's three cities in one: Rome of Caesars, Catholic Rome and Modern Rome. They are different but they are Rome. Not so many cities have so many sightseeings. Fountain Trevie, Piazza di Spagnia, Castel del Angelo, etc. And of course Rome is very big city that makes me feel at home because I live in Moscow!
