or...Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore
Pictured below is the band at the Topeka Municipal Auditorium in the 60's. Members are from left to right: Larry, Phil, John, Ernie and Gordon (hidden behind Ernie). One
of the midwest's most prolific bands, The Thingies Of America are all
alive and well and are living out their lives in blissful ignorance of
the legends they left behind. |
Contrary to popular
belief, the band DID NOT get it's name from the Blue Things (another
legendary Kansas band with a great lead guitarist |
"The Psychedelic Years" The picture on the left was taken at our manager's club in Austin, Texas. Not in this picture is Phil...on vacation! Nancy is the young blond chick. She danced and did some backup singing with the band. She was totally freaky in the way she danced. Real hippy - acid stuff. We love her creative wildness. In her hands is Click-Click the cat. |

During this time, we had the honor of playing with some really strange characters in bands like Shiva's Head Band, Thirteenth Floor Elevators, and some really "white" guy named Johnny Winter, a really black guy named Lightning Hopkins. Some of our favorite haunts were the Matchbox, 13th Street Club (great blues), The New Orleans Club, and The Vulcan Gas Company. |

Pictured right is Larry our fearless leader. This picture was taken at the Matchbox in Austin - 1967. |
Oh yea...we also played the first (and last, I believe) Zilker Park "Love-In". Here is a poster from that very same love-in! |
