Climbing up the walls…

·       Thom met the man he always admires, Michael Stipe of REM. He also wanted to know what a band could expect when it reaches the level of stardom.

“They all pose and smile and do the whole political bit and are extremely nice. I’m shocked. It seems you have to be nice to people forever. I may as well get used to my cracked smiles.”

·       Thom introduces a new song entitled, ‘No Surprises, Please’ on 3rd August. Stipe was pleased with that song and he himself grew into a bigger fan of Radiohead.

·       Thom went out for a dinner with REM members that night and a young fan approached their table to ask for Thom’s autograph instead of Stipe’s. Thom was extremely embarrassed but the REM boys thought it was hilarious. Thom actually hid behind his napkin for 5 minutes from embarrassment.

·       ‘Just’ was released on and Thom loved the video so much as it captured the song exactly as he wanted it to be.

·       1995 was a special year for Thom besides having to meet Michael Stipe. He’d finally settled himself in something that he’d put his musical earnings into. A home. He and Rachel moved into a house that had extra bedrooms for visiting friends and a pond in the backyard, in a un-rock-and-roll fashion. Thom was rarely there anyway because the band had little time off in ’95.

·       Thom loves to make speeches before playing ‘Creep’ live onstage.

“We still play this song because it is a good song. I don’t know what this one’s called but this is the one you have in karaoke machines, but it’s a good song.”

·       During their tour with Soul Asylum, Radiohead’s gear was stolen from their hotel in Denver. They went to LA to purchase their equipments on Thom’s Birthday, 7th October 1995.

·       At the near end of their tour, Thom lost his vocal cords again. Many call in doctors for quick and simple solutions. But it only helps Thom in the short term.

·       Thom’s health deteriorates again as their tour went in Europe.

·       On 25 Nov, in Munich, Germany, a doctor told Thom to take steroids to ward off laryngitis. Thom, who was sick and fed-up, refused. As a result, he blacked out and collapsed onstage that night, after performing only 5 songs. At that point, he had been on the road for 10 straight months with very little down time.

·       Unsympathetic fans expressed their disapproval. NME said that Thom had thrown into a fit and abandoned the show.
