I’m back to save the universe…

·       Thom (and Colin) found a vacant Elizabethan mansion in Bath in order to get their recordings of OK Computer done there. So, they turned the empty house into a studio.

“The first week we were there we didn’t leave the house at all and after a while, it started feeling like we were on this little island separate from the rest of the universe. I’d go for walks around the gardens, listening to all this music pouring out of the house in the dark, and in the background you’d hear horny vixens yowling, which is scary as hell. And I started to feel a bit…uneasy.”

·       Thom had written ‘Exit Music (For a Film) for Romeo and Juliet credits. As usual, he played it on an acoustic guitar for the others, expecting them to suggest ways of filling out the sound. But they were first hesitant to mess with it because according to Jonny, it is impossible to know what to add to it without making it worst.

·       Exit Music has really got into Thom, where he said, “Wow”.

·       Thom had intended to make his voice come across in a different way on every track. He worried that his brand vocals would limit his ability to cover a range of material.

“It was frustrating, I didn’t feel I could write certain songs because they don’t fit the voice—the one I’d ended up with. So, I spend a lot of time on OK Computer trying not to do voices like mine.”

·       During breaks from recording, Thom took the time to help Drugstore record a new song, ‘El President’.

·       During their time off in October, Thom and the others worked to improved their official Web Site. They’d been surfing the Internet since the beginning of the recording sessions.

“Our official website is not going to have much information because there seems to be plenty of unofficial sites who seem to know better what’s going on than we do. They certainly seem to be writing lyrics for me, if I’m ever stuck for an idea I go and read them.”

·       Thom got very drunk one night and presented lists of quotes from books and newspapers that he find interesting, as lyrics for Fitter Happier. But no one had been able to help him refine the jottings. So, he entered the list into the computer. That was how the song came about and he loved it.

·       Thom and Stanley Donwood worked on the album cover, but Thom doesn’t like the final product although it was intriguing and attention grabbing.

“It’s pretty dreadful but it’s the best we could come out with at the time. But it’s awful. I hate it, it’s fucking rubbish.”

·       Thom was very drunk when he did all the artwork. He also did a very Radiohead-ish remark at the bottom of the credits page on the inside of the cover. “We hope that you are ok. Thank you for listening.”

“I typed that and it looked excellent… it was what you write when you’ve rung up someone who haven’t seen you for awhile.”
