as a Private and Corporal. He was engaged in the Brier Creek
battle. He was discharged August 4, 1779 but enlisted again and
served as a substitute for his cousin Joshua Grantham (he had
children and Richard did not therefore he substituted for
Joshua).

Everly He was just past 16 y/o when he enlisted. His
name appears on the muster role in
1776 as a member of Capt. Heinrich Fister's Co. of the German Regiment ,
Maryland troops of the Revolution (Vol. 18, folio 261. His
discharge is given as Dec.2, 1778 in this record, his name being spelled
as "Leonard Aberly", (Vol. 18, folio 184). The German Regiment
was organized by authority of the Continental Congress on Jun 26, 1776
and comprised of four companies from Maryland and five companies from
Pennsylvania, and was commanded by Col. Nicholas Huassecker. They
took part in the battles of Trenton (Dec. 26, 1776) and Princeton (3
June 1777). They were also with Washington at Brandywine and Valley
Forge. Leonard was born in 1760 and died in Pennsylvania in
1830. When the family came from Germany their name was spelled Eberle.
