Notes for Luke Adams:
On September 12, 1775, the Committee of Observation for Prince George's met and appointed a committee to enroll a company of Minutemen and set up a Committee of Correspondence. Benjamin and Amelia Thorne's daughter, Susannah (b. 1766) married Luke Adams, a young farmer from Piscataway on June 2, 1780. In a somewhat sheepish letter of August 22, 1781, Adam's commanding officer, the County Lieutenant assists newlywed Adams in attempting to arrange to relieve him of duty because of "a pain in his hip".
"This will be delivered to you, Luke Adams, one of the drafts from the last Class, he and another married man were drafted in the same Class, they drew for the chance of going, the lot fell on Adams who was married this Spring, has a crop on hand which he must loose if he goes out, which must be a great prejudice to him, though he has at present no children to maintain; He has been in the service and finding it prejudicial to his health, employed another man to take his place, he had been lately sick and now complains of a pain in his hip which he says renders him incapable of marching, he has been of some use to me, having employed him to ride after some of those men who did not appear and particularly in taking one Nacey Smith, a black fellow who deserted from Marlboro. He now goes up with one Wise who kept out of the way. If this should not be though a sufficient excuse, and your Excellency and Honorables think proper to keep him in service, I could wish him to return again to assist in catching some of those men who keep out of the way, as he is well acquainted in the different parts of the county, and pretty active, when in health.
