IV. Donald M. Grant Editions

Beginning in 1974, a series of limited edition books (about 3000 copies) was begun by Donald Grant of West Kingston, RI.

These books contain only the Robert Howard stories, one or two per volume. Each features about a half-dozen full color illustrations by semi-prominent fantasy artists. Several are still in print.

In order of publication:

The People of the Black Circle, 1974 Illustrations by David Ireland.
The Tower of the Elephant, 1975 Also contains The God in the Bowl. Illustrations by Richard Robertson.
A Witch Shall be Born, 1975 Illustrations by Alicia Austin.
Red Nails, 1975 Illustrations by George Barr.
The Devil in Iron, 1976 Also contains Shadows in Zamboula. Illustrations by Dan Green.
Rogues in the House, 1976 Also contains The Frost Giant's Daughter. Illustrations by Marcus Boas.
Queen of the Black Coast, 1978 Also contains The Vale of Lost Women. Illustrations by Michael Hague.
Jewels of Gwahlur, 1979 Also contains The Snout in the Dark (fragment). Illustrations by Dean Morrissey.
Black Colossus, 1979 Also contains Shadows in the Moonlight. Illustrations by Ned Dameron.
The Pool of the Black One, 1986 Also contains Drums of Tombalku (fragment). Illustrations by Hank Jankus.
The Hour of the Dragon, 1989 Illustrations by Ezra Tucker.

As of this writing (Jan 1998), it seems that three more volumes remain to complete the set, probably to contain:

1. Beyond the Black River and The Black Stranger

2. The Phoenix on the Sword and The Scarlet Citadel

3. The Slithering Shadow and perhaps one or more of the fragments: The Hall of the Dead, The Hand of Nergal, Wolves Beyond the Border

Note: at least two of the Grant editions were reprinted as paperbacks by Grosset & Dunlap:

1. The Tower of the Elephant

2. The Devil in Iron

V. Berkeley Editions, edited by Karl Edward Wagner

Like the Grant books, these feature only the Robert E. Howard Conan stories, exactly as published in Weird Tales. They were published in both hard- and softcover; the hardcovers were also printed in Book Club editions, which are noticably thinner, and according to some, have textual errors.
