Books on Screenwriting
The following are books that I recommend for plot and story development
(click on the image to purchase from Amazon.com):
This book, THE WRITER'S JOURNEY by Christopher Vogler,
is an excellent book on story and plot development. Mr. Vogler
interprets Joseph Campbell's concepts of common myths amongst different
societies as they pertain to human actions and applies them to formulate
believable movie plots. This book is highly recommended.
This book, MYTH AND THE MOVIES by Stuart Voytilla, is a
superb companion to THE WRITER'S JOURNEY. The book takes
the concepts expressed in "The Journey" and applies them to fifty
well known movies. The book is very revealing in the analysis of
movies. It reveals that there really are universal themes that
all movies exhibit.
This book, THE HERO WITH A THOUSAND FACES, by Joseph
Campbell, is the basis of the "Hero's/Writer's Journey". Mr.
Campbell, a renowned Professor of Mythology, illustrated that all cultures
throughout the human experience have common experiences and stories
that relate to how one lives their life. One of the very best books
on the subject. Arguably, Hollywood has embraced the ideas in
Campbell's book, so a working knowledge of Campbell's work is a must
to screenwriters and story tellers in general.
