THOTH INFORMATION

By tradition, Thoth is described as a man with the head of an ibis holding a scribe's palette and stylus. He is also shown as a full ibis, or sometimes as baboon. Originally the god of the moon, Thoth is often depicted with a lunar crescent or disc on his head. His sacred animal, the baboon, is often represented sitting on Thoth's head or shoulders directing the work of the scribes.

He is the creator of magic, speech, mathematics, the calendar, the inventor of writing, teacher of man, the messenger of the gods, and presided over all forms of measurement. He is the divine record-keeper and mediator.

Thoth also participated in the judgment of the dead, as all of the deceased's actions were recorded in Thoth's Great Book that contained the historical record of everything that happens in Time.  Thoth then becomes known as the "Scribe of the Gods".

Thoth was also the greatest of "magicians," as only he knew the complete powers of the sacred words.

In modern times, Thoth is the God that is consulted on all projects of writing, personal histories, and other forms of magic. "The Book of Thoth" is a traditional name for tarot cards.

His principal sanctuary was at Hermopolis in the Nile Delta region.
