U.S. Tibet School Project
About the Schools

Today children in the village of Katsel, in the mountains of central Tibet, attend school for the first time in more than 30 years.

The majority of schools are grade 1-6. The students learn Tibetan and Chinese, and mathematics. Physical training, geography, and art is also taught. The children who attend the schools are from poor families. Some children have lost one or both parents. All the subjects in the schools are taught in the Tibetan language.
The primary boarding school in Katsel is the society's first project in Tibet. Katsel is about 2 hours away from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. The school in Katsel completed its construction in 1994 and at present services 240 students.
