I was born on 6 October 1963 to my parents, Tibor and Christina, in Johannesburg, South Africa. Three years later, we immigrated to Canada with my 1 year old brother, Curt, settling initially in Toronto, Ontario, and moving within two years to nearby Streetsville, then eventually to the residential community of Sheridan Homelands in Mississauga. The family house was and remains a comfortable semi- backing out onto a large field complete with numerous forests, ponds and other objects of boyhood adulation and intrigue. Besides Kool Aid breaks and the inconvenient interruption of school, my childhood was largely spent in this field doing "boy"-type stuff: climbing trees; squashing frogs; catching voles; mounting expeditions; throwing apples at other kids. This prepared me well for later life, and, indeed, many colleagues remark on the evident influence of this formative period. My school career progressed through a variety of local schools, culminating with graduation from Erindale Secondary School in 1982. I was a fairly solid but idiosyncratic member of the "Nerd" fraternity (thanks to "big" Billwe can come out of the closet now): member of the varsity wrestling, cross-country and swimming teams; but best known (of course) as the "Chess" guy. My childhood aspirations were typical for the adventurous science enthusiast of my generation: cowboy; soldier; geologist; astronaut. Given these, and my "field" experience, it was inevitable that I would get drawn into engineering and the military. At 16, I joined the Queen's York Rangers armoured reconaissance regiment at Fort York Armouries in Toronto, and, two years later, attended the Royal Roads Military College in Victoria, BC. In 1986, I completed my undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at the Royal Military College in Kingston, and embarked on my career as an aerospace engineering officer in the Canadian Forces. Over the next 10 years, I filled a number of roles in bases in Edmonton, Borden, West Germany, Trenton and Ottawa, and obtained an MSc in Aerospace Vehicle Design from the Cranfield Institute of Technology in the United Kingdom. By 1996, however, the novelty of three month deployments away from home, Christmases spent "on the line" and nearly annual moves started wearing thin, and I moved back into civilian life. Since 1996, I have been managing multifunctional product development teams in the aerospace and aircraft electronics industry. My wife, Terri, and I met at the Royal Military College during my third and her first year. After a lengthy, and often long distance relationship, Terri finally "popped the question" and we were married in 1989 in a small church at her home town of Ridgetown, Ontario (pop. 3000). Terri has experienced the life of a service spouse, joining me in Germany and England, where our two children, Heather and Chris, were born in 1989 and 1992 respectively. Upon leaving the armed forces, our family settled first in Whitby, and finally in Mississauga, where we now live in the leafy enclave of Erin Mills, just a few miles from my childhood home. Terri is an avid writer, and is continuing her studies at the University in Toronto. I work at Honeywell - Engines and Systems, which is walking distance from home, and typically the family gets together for lunch each day. Interests and Activities I say that I'm interested in most things - others prefer to call it a short attention span. Either way, I love the outdoors, and I love learning "stuff". Here's a list of some things I've done/am doing/would like to do: |

Terri and I do a fair bit of volunteer work. I am Akela for the 2nd Erin Mills Falcon Pack (Scouts), and have been involved the past couple of years in a government/industry program called Marsville, which is aimed at teaching elementary school children about Mars, science and technology project management. Terri and I are the Credit Valley Conservation Authority representatives monitoring the frog population in the Rattray Marsh and numerous other minor wetland areas in southern Peel.
