A Sampling of my Musical TastesI am a huge music fan. I've grown up on everything from the Stones and the Beatles to Engelbert Humperdink and the Glenn Miller Orchestra (my parent's tastes) and everything in between. I think you'll find my taste in music to be very eclectic. My genre of choice for the past couple of years has been Alternative. I love all the new bands that have been coming onto the scene fast and furiously. A few of them stand out as my favourites. Our Lady Peace first made an impression on me with "Superman's Dead". I went out and picked up one of their CD's "Naveed" only to find that the song wasn't on that album, but I was pleasantly surprised. As it turned out, I think that everyone must have thought that I'd gotten the disk stuck in my machine or something, I played it that much. Another band that I listen to often is Matchbox 20. I find the vocals to be strong and I love music with lots of guitar play. Speaking of guitars, no one has impressed me more than Kenny Wayne Sheppard. I find it hard to believe that someone so young can be so talented. His fingers must be double-jointed or something in order for him to play so fast. He's truly amazing and I'm sure we will be hearing a lot about him in the years to come. I can't talk about smoking guitars without mentioning Lenny Kravitz. He makes it look so easy and insights people into playing air guitars from the first note. Here's an interesting little tidbit of trivia, did you know that Lenny Kravitz's mother (Roxie Roker) played the next door neighbour on the Jeffersons? Yep, she was Mrs. Willis, the one married to the white guy that drove George nuts *s*. It seems as if every song that LIVE releases turns into a hit. I love their music. I'm not going to say a whole heck of a lot about them now because if I get started I probably won't stop *s*. I think I could probably dedicate an entire page to them. If you are going to check out their link, don't forget the check out the personal homepage of Ed Kowalczyk the lead singer, it's truly a must see. The Foo Fighters are a band that I became aware of for the first time on their rendition of a "Mentos" commercial. I must say I passed them off as some sort of wacko band that didn't have any talent or depth, boy was I wrong. They have definitely overcome the Mentos episode and proven that they are a force to be reckoned with. There is a line of lyric in the song "Everlong" that sticks with me, "Breathe out, so I can breathe you in....." I'm not sure why but I love that line. Offspring is another band that is constantly refreshing (but not in a minty sort of way *s*). No two songs sound the same and they can sing anything from ballads to punk without skipping a beat. Powerful vocals. And, ofcourse, we can't leave out The Tea Party! I had the pleasure of seeing them live twice in the past year. Once at Edgefest is the summer of '98 and then at a local bar in May of '99 for their release of the Triptych album. They blew the roof off the place! Green Day are another band, like the Offspring, that surprise me with their versatility. They can be almost maniacal in some songs and then smooth and soft in others. Speaking of soft, Sarah McLachlan has a voice so smooth that it's almost chilling. Her music can be so beautiful and haunting, a pure sound. On the flip side of the coin, there's Seal. His second album is my favourite and his voice is so strong and powerful and smooth that it soothes you into another zone. It's best to listen to him with the volume turned up, the lights low and your eyes closed. The lyrics, like Sarah's, flow. The Dave Matthews Band take things a step further.....a dance step. Whenever I hear one of their songs I get "happy feet", I just can't sit still. My toes start tapping and a smile spreads across my face. Definitely up-beat music. (Must be all the big band stuff I grew up with.) The Rolling Stones can't go unmentioned. They are such a force in the music industry. I always enjoyed their music but I never really appreciated them until I finally saw them in concert during their Bridges to Babylon Tour. They were here last year, the first Canadian stop on the tour, and boy they shook the stadium. Only Mick Jagger can dance like that and get away with it. If I was dancing with someone and they started to dance like that, I'd walk away. *LOL* Wow, hard to believe they're all old enough to be my father (somehow I couldn't ever picture my dad being like that). Well, this list is starting to get really long so I guess I'll stop now. I think you have a good idea as to my musical taste now, but before I go, I have to mention just one more band. My all time favourite band. Blue Oyster Cult. I fell in love with their music the very first time I ever heard "Don't Fear the Reaper" many years ago. I always thought that I was a bit of an oddity, liking that song until I heard it reprised as a theme for the Stephen King movie, The Stand. Then a whole new generation of people came to know that song. A true classic. I think I've talked enough (must be the Irish in me). If you want to find some more links to the bands I've mentioned or if you want to find some links to some bands I haven't mentioned, feel free to drop me a line and I'll try to help you out. Just click on the link below. While you're here, why not check out the page of the radio station that my receiver seems to be stuck on *s* and the page of what maybe the "ultimate" Alternative concert of the year. I've also set up a couple of links to some pages that you should definitely check out. Guaranteed to be memorable. |
