Chapter Three The day came, cloudy and storming. Both McKenzie and Lance felt that the weather fit their moods.Even though they were miles apart, without realizing it, they showered and drank coffee at the same time, both still used to the others habits. After scanning the small room for all of her belongings, McKenzie was satisfied that she had picked everything up. She left the hotel shortly after eight and got back on the road. She was too upset to eat, and she knew that she would miss the breakfast Lance always made for her if she did stop and eat. She remembered the first time he had surprised her with breakfast, it was the most touching thing anyone had done for her. After that it was a tradition, every Friday Lance would make breakfast for her while she lounged around. Even when they were travelling he found a way to whip something together. Lance in the meantime was starting his traditional breakfast when he realized that there was no one to eat it. No one to giggle in excitement and act surprised everytime he did it. No one to fall into bed with when breakfast was only half eaten. He sighed deeply as the doorbell rang. He was shocked to see his four best friends on the other side. "What are you guys doing here so early? I didn't expect you till this evening." He said moving aside so that they could enter. Each of them stopped briefly to hug him. "We figured you could use the company. If you don't feel up to it we can go though." JC stated his eyes full of question. "No it's great, I could use a distraction." He led the men into the kitchen and continued with breakfast. They tried to make small talk but their efforts were greeted with silence. Lance concentrated on his cooking and tried not to burst into tears at his friends attempts. The phone rang a little after nine and Lance ran to answer it. "Hello?" "Hello, could I speak to McKenzie Wilson please?" The voice on the other end of the phone was tense, panicked almost. "She isn't in, could I take a message?" Lance sighed deeply in his disappointment that it wasn't her. "This is Dr. Wright, it is imperative that I speak with her. When will she be back?" "Hey John, it's Lance, she left yesterday I don't know where she went or when she'll be back. Why, what is going on?" He asked now visibly shaken at his long time friend's urgency in speaking to her. "Oh great, what a mess." The doctor mumbled under his breath. "There was a mix up with her biopsy results, she is headed to Santa Barbara for no reason. You don't know about this?" "No, what the hell are you talking about?" Lance practically screamed into the phone. "I can't really go into details, but we did some tests and the results I gave her were the wrong ones. God Lance, I'm so sorry. I've been trying to reach her doctor in California but I haven't been able to get through." "Oh my god, I have to go." He hung up quickly and turned to his friends. "She's headed for California." He stated simply before turning to head upstairs and pack. The other four looked at each other quickly before following close behind him. Chapter Four Main Story Page |
