Chapter Seven Kenz pulled out of the hotel parking lot, shaken by her close call with Justin. She had seen the recognition register on his face when he realized it was her. A part of her wished she had stopped the elevator from closing, but she knew that if she'd done that she would have had to face everyone, and she wasn't ready for that. She pulled into the parking lot of the discreet building that housed the surgery center. She stepped inside the large building and was thankful to be alone in the waiting room. A receptionist smiled at her and after taking her name asked her to fill out some paperwork. When she completed that she was led to her room. The room was small and private, the television in the corner was turned off and soft music filtered into the room. She was given a gown to change into and left alone. It only took a few moments for the doctor to appear in her doorway, smiling kindly. "Good morning McKenzie, I am doctor Price." He shook her hand and sat next to her on the bed. "Do you have any questions for me before we start?" "How long will this take?" "Two hours at the most, you will be back in your room by noon. You should be able to go home tomorrow." "WIll I be in a lot of pain?" "There will be some swelling and discomfort. We can give you something to ease that though." "Ok, I guess that's all." She tried to smile as her eyes filled with tears. The doctor placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder as he stood. "A lab technician will be in momentarily to take you for a final mammogram. We should be ready to go within an hour." He stepped out of the room and disappeared down the long hallway leaving Kenz with a feeling of dread. Lance's desperation quickly turned to fury as he picked himself up from the pavement. He stormed back into the hotel and up to his room. He immediately started throwing his things into his suitcase. "Lance, what are you doing?" Justin asked from the doorway. "I am going home. I cannot stay here and wait for her to come to me. She should have come to me a long time ago. You know I thought she loved me, I guess I was wrong." "Lance she does love you. I talked to her last night. She was just afraid that we would treat her differently, that we would pity her." Chris stood next to Lance placing a hand on his shoulder. Lance brushed him away and went to the hallway. "I'm really sorry that I dragged out guys all the way out here." He turned to step onto the elevator as a sleepy JC emerged from his room. "What's going on?" He asked looking from Lance to Chris and Justin. "I'm going home, see you later." Lance sighed as the elevator doors closed. The three friends stood looking at the doors then at each other, wondering what they should do now. Chapter Eight Main story page |
