The last nativity scenes disappear from shop windows
about time twelve days already from Epiphany of the three magi kings

Now there are not so many booths and makeshift tables piled up along the sidewalks and streets of downtown Tijuana, for the great Christmas sales season is ended and only the quote-unquote "ordinary" vendors are hawking their wares in this deliciously medieval & postmodern metropolis at the end of the earth.

And the poetmonger tries to write it down in two languages.

It is Saturday, and I shall soon walk out from this café and watch the tourists walk up the hill from the river, as always on weekends.  There are still too few, and You would be Welcome, no, More Than Welcome. So come on down, spend a few dollars on lunch, and walk around, see Tijuana and its vision of Mexico on the edge...

Head two blocks west on 2nd to Niños and explore the Popo market diagonally across from the cathedral.  Go back into the depth of the market, enter under the arch and...

Lot of stuff around here to see and, if you want, buy.  Across second by the CINCO DE MAYO building is a shop with all kinds of lapel pins (especially sports) and little figures in the window...

Next door, or next to that, is a killer shop to get ranchero shirts and hats.

It is difficult to read literature
in Spanish; never ceases to amaze me
(look Ma - a cliché)that I can actually
understand this foreign language that surrounds
me here in Tijuana and unfolds before me
whenever I open a book in the park
to read, Spanish window within Spanish
window, book on bench under trees where the
pigeons drop so move to another bench now
but still the sweet noise of children shouting
and parents laughing on the weekend, in
the park, outside the book where my brain,
absolutely alone, yet surrounded, where
my brain swims deeper into the language,
the difficult but beautiful language
frozen on the page, surrounded by a
rushing fluid language of speech around us,
yes, that is the window within window,
now within this window where you read me
in English not in Spanish, yes, it is
difficult and beautiful and sweet here,
a hard candy melting in our mouths,
now, together, apart, and then... gone.
