ARCHITECTURE #1

The place was cheaply built
in the blink of long eyes

he said, directing my attention
toward Nueva Tijuana .

I saw curious square blocks
and cut-open walkways

punctuate their reference to
walking, but car is king .

Boulevard across the middle
hauls trucks and taxis .

On either side, the wings spread
house apartment streets

where little stores cluster
between corners on .

Narrow real sidewalks affirm how
this is a planned community

a sudden Mexican city that
marks the edge, the line

of factories trucking far loads
and new shopping stores .

As the last yellow beams of light
paint the square boxes downtown
I imagine the Earth turning and
wonder if you can feel it.

At first blush I think no, no one
can feel it
             but

then I stop
            and think why not

because we CAN feel the gravity holding us
down, driving our food into
           through and out of

our guts, gravity .

AND because if you lean over
we fall down don't we .

So the turning of the Earth is
a feeling of our gravity
                         and when you look
                          up
and see sun or moon or stars come and go
slowly
       in that lingering sunrise or
       that darkening night

THEN the other side of coin is the ground
this very dirt where we stand and watch

heaven move its big fire

That's just too explanatory too much winding
up the clock to its breaking point and

SpRoInG ! The thing broke . There be

mirrors here in the hallways on the walls of
the rooms reflecting one side back against
other . There be also mirrors on the street
moving one life into a larger city
                                 double
where a dog howls at the siren moon
on the very edge of California

in the crack between California

where a dry river runs dirty runoff water
over the stones over the sand through the
                                tangled bushes

where the streams run down hillsides into canyons and
into valleys . Where the hillsides rise up
and bend toward a higher plateau in
wetter, cooler, thinner air, a mountain kingdom
oak and pine and cedar and manzanita

where lions and cats and coyote and eagle
measure their footprint

before man c a m e

h o m e to C a l i f o r n i a

TO PUT ALL THAT 500 year climate
on a page is also to

forget five million years of geology
pieces a domino crust bumping

and rumbling island then peninsula
then broken river sea

¿what is a mammoth compared to that?

¿gonna make it real compared to what?

this measure is only a broken cup .
no water drinks . no fire cooks .

those must wait for dinner .

unless... ah, yes... here it is

the sweetest memory in my mind
of crystal clear cold water

at deer spring on Cuyamaca peak
and

then tragedy

the recognition it burnt last year .
