San Blas, Nayarit
San Blas is an insect-infested, moldering jungleside mess some 40 kilometers west of Tepic, BUT it is historic, can be charming, and is also scenic both for its ecological wonders -- a REAL jungle boat ride -- and its historical importance. From the late 1500s until the 1800s, this crumbling old port was THE port of entry for the Manila galleons with all their treasures from China and the Orient. This was also the point of embarcation for all early boats to California, including the Franciscan missionary expedition led by Junipero Serra that would found San Diego, California in 1769.
In spite of the bugs -- which ARE notorious -- San Blas remains popular with various sectors of the touristic crowd. Kind of well-visited-but-still-slightly-off-the-main-path. Surfers and jungle lovers. History buffs. Beach bunny history dilettantes bored with the hustle of Puerto Vallarta. Like me heh hee he.
Much more laid-back than Mazatlan or P.V., San Blas is a place where, like many tropical spots, evening brings both blessed coolness but also the bugs -- especially in summer.
Jungle cruises up the river depart from the docks on the eastern edge of town.
