Tepic, Nayarit
Capital of the state of Nayarit, Tepic spreads at the foot of an extinct volcano. A Spanish city founded in the 1500s, it is usually ignored by tourists who are more eager to visit Guadalajara, Mazatlan, or Puerto Vallarta. A few knowing adventurers turn aside here to reach San Blas and Mexcaltitan. History buffs (who will certainly visit San Blas) will also note that Junipero Serra stayed in Tepic while waiting for the voyage across the gulf to enter California and found the new chain of missions that would reach all the way from San Diego to San Francisco. How far we have come to return here in his footsteps.
This is Huichol and Cora Indian country, and their distinctive arts can be found in shops in Tepic as well as in nearby Santiago Ixcuintla (jumping off point for the lagoon village of Mexcaltitan).
East from the coast rise the Western Mother Mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental. Don't be redundant but they are a distant promise of adventure and danger. Illegal opium crops and government raiders. Stay on the main roads, poet.
Or stay in the city!
