En 1916 había menos de dos mil almas dedicadas a la agricultura, el comercio local y los primeros negocios turísticos.

Luego salió la famosa ley seca en la unión vecina y empezaron a llegar montones de estadounidenses para tomar y jugar. Entre noche y día nació la “edad de oro” del turismo bajacaliforniano. Tijuana proclamó su título de “la ciudad más visitada del mundo”. A la vez empezó la leyenda negra, según la cual TJ era la capital de prostitución, alcohol y juegos de azar. Actualmente se ha ganado la reputación de ser el nexo entre narcotraficantes y la corrupción fiscal.

Sea lo que sea, Tijuana es ahora una ciudad llena de industria y comercio. Se dice que aquí se fabrican más televisores que en cualquier otro lugar del planeta. La mayor parte de la gente acá quiere trabajar, educar sus hijos y mejorar su vida y hogar. Disfrutan bien pasear por el parque o la playa, salir al cine y restaurante, y celebrar sus fiestas – en México casi siempre hay fiesta.

Hoy día, en gran parte debido a la migración de centenares de millares de personas de toda la república, Tijuana es una ciudad más mexicana que nunca. Hasta los chilangos quieren vivir aquí aunque usted no lo crea. Con razón dice el lema del municipio que aquí empieza la patria.

Then came the famous prohibition years in the United States and thousands of Americans came to drink and gamble. Overnight the "golden age" of Baja California tourism was born. Tijuana proclaimed its title of “the most visited city in the world.” At the same time the "dark legend" began, according to which TJ was the capital of prostitution, alcohol and gambling. At the present time it has gained a reputation for being a nexus between drugtrafficers and official corruption.

Whatever may be the case, Tijuana is today a city full of industry and commerce. It is said that more television sets are put together here than anywhere else on the planet. The better part of the people here want to work, raise their children and better their lives and homes. They enjoy walking in the park or on the beach, going out to movies and restaurants, and celebrating their fiestas -- in Mexico there is almost always a fiesta.

Today, in great part due to the migration of hundreds of thousands of people from all over the republic of Mexico, Tijuana is a more Mexican town than ever before. Even people from Mexico City want to live here, believe it or not. The motto of the municipality truly is "the homeland begins here."
