News for July 19, 2002

We had a great weekend last week. A fabulous trip to Niagara (if you exclude my getting into a 4 car pile up on the Gardiner and then locking my keys in the rental car at the end of the day... comedy of errors... you had to be there). It was hot but who's complaining as long as you keep moving it was fine. randy and I got to try out the new Salomon 5 wheel skates on the famous hill down into Queenston... thank god for brakes!

This Sunday we will skate in Mississauga (see Sunday Skates for details). Great trails and streets... always a good time. Don't miss it!

We have been busy putting together our Mid Summer Groove Skate Weekend. (see the home page for PDF files of the brochure. Note there is a Canadian and US version make sure you download the right one)

Remember the skating is free all weekend it's only the party on Friday night that has a charge for food and entertainment. But on Friday night we will be giving away hundreds of dollars of skate merchandise so it will be worth your while!

Please book now if you are interested in coming (follow the registration instructions in the PDF brochure) We need to give the Waterside Bistro a head count so we can order food.

Tell all your friends this should be the best street skating in TO... all new routes. Please remember this is an advanced skate you must be able to keep control on a down hill, brake and maneuver on demand.

It's going to be a blast so come out and join us even if it's just to skate!

That's it for now see you Sunday!

Ciao!

Richard

News for June 21, 2002

We were rained out last Sunday but some of our beginners were out there practicing anyway. Good job! Nothing like a little rain Practice!

This Sunday we are going to the Toronto Islands so don't forget shoes or sandals and money for the ferry. Check the info line for all the details.

Last Wednesday night's skate was a incredible! 2 hours of street boppin' all over... what a riot! Randy did a great job laying out a challenging but exciting route. This is definitely an intermediate to advanced skate. You must be very comfortable in traffic with very good maneuvering and stopping skills... and be able to hang on to the pace. If your not sure you can handle this type of skate talk to either Richard, Randy or Morgan for a proper skill assessment. Randy said after the skate... "no one in the city is doing a skate like this". So if your reading this and want to join in (and you know you can handle it!) come on out we guarantee a good time on wheels! Always check the Info Line for time and location details.

Don't forget we have Philadelphia next weekend so most of the executive will be away. We are looking for someone to lead the skate while we are out of town. If you're interested please talk to either Randy or Morgan this weekend.

Also don't forget the weekend after next is our first trip to Niagara-On-The-Lake. This is a premiere skate not to be missed... miles of great trails (and some wicked hills!) and a gourmet catered picnic lunch. Talk to the staff this weekend and book your spot. The TILT member cost will be minimal somewhere between $15 and $20 for the lunch. As we did last year we will car pool out to Niagara-On-The-Lake. Pass the word around. This event is open to all. There will be an additional surcharge for non members (that cost has yet to be determined).

I will be in Ottawa this weekend checking out the trails on the Quebec Hull side . I'll report to you next week - these trails are supposed to be superb. Maybe we will plan a trip!

That's it for now see you next week!

News for June 14, 2002

Good turn out last Sunday there was 20 of us in total. The weather was superb... lots of heat finally!

Congrats to Derek he won that wonderful Salomon back pack... enjoy Derek!

The weather looks iffy at best for this weekend. So our Sunday skate may be kept in the local area in case of rain,. This week we will be giving away Salomon palm guards and a Salomon T-Shirt.

Our own shirts should be ready just before Philly. I will send out a personal e-mail as soon as we have them so you can come and collect your shirt.

Last call for the Philly trip! If you need transportation we are carpooling down send us an e-mail if you need or can provide a ride so we can get it all organized.

That's it for now see you on Sunday!

Ciao!

News for June 6, 2002

Thanks to all who turned out for the Ride For Heart event last Sunday. There was 9 of us in total... a very good show of support. Now all we have to do is get more skaters to show. It was a bit disappointing overall.
The event seemed to attract a minimal number of skaters. I'd be surprised if there were more than a couple hundred people in total. Considering how many skaters there are in this city I consider that a very poor representation. In contrast to last year's turn out where the event was almost rained out this year we had sun and somewhat warm weather... so where was everyone? I'm not sure TILT will be represented at this event next year. This is primarily a cycling event that's held on a weekend which overlaps an in-line Provincial Race weekend - taking out a few skaters whose presence might have made this a bit more exciting. Anyway as a group we will need to discuss any further participation in this event.
We made a good presence at our booth. Everyone in the TILT shirts we had made for Miami (yes everybody the real ones are coming I sent the art to the printer today), a new 6 foot banner displaying all our sponsors... we presented well. Unfortunately the interest from the crowd was minimal at best. But it's good exposure for the club name. We need to get it out there... make it recognizable as the in-line skate club in Toronto.
Our first Wednesday night skate was rained out so we will try the same route next week. Randy has a great route planned so don't miss it!
Good news our party in August is shaping up to be a real smash! We are dragging people in from all over. This is likely to turn out to be the skate party event of the year. We now have interest from Ottawa, New York, Washington and Detroit not to mention local interest. This could well exceed our goal of 100 people... spread the word and lets make this an event to remember! As we did last year we will start the evening off with a city skate (about 90 minutes) a good warm up for those racing in the TISC races on Saturday and Sunday. Lots of prizes to give away from our sponsors. Great food from the Waterside Bistro with some groovin' summer tunes all at the waters edge... sounds like a pretty good time to me.
This Sunday looks like the best yet for weather so we have decided to skate the Mississauga trails along the lake. Lesson at 10 am at the Waterside and at 11 am sharp we will leave (by car pool or you can meet us there) for the Colonel Samuel Smith Park near the Humber College Lakeshore campus at the foot of Kipling Avenue. If you are coming on your own please meet the group in the first parking lot at 11:30 am. We will split the group up into at least two... a beginners and a more intermediate/advanced group. We will probably stop at the Timothy's in Port Credit for a break or hit one of the local restaurants for brunch. It's going to be a good one so don't miss it. Plus this week we will be giving away a very cool Salomon back pack... ya gotta be there to win! We will also be holding an open TILT business meeting after the skate. All members are welcome.
That's it for now see you on Sunday!

Ciao!

News for May 31, 2002

We had a good turn out last Sunday. Thanks to all who showed. And a special congrats to the beginners who did a great job keeping up. That was a tough route last week it's long and the hills can be intimidating... good job. As you know we are all at Ride for Heart this Sunday so there will not be a supervised Sunday skate. As always feel free to meet anyway and skate on your own or with other members who may show. Just a note It seems some of the other skate clubs (who shall remain nameless) are using the Waterside for parking etc. The Waterside Sports Club is our sponsor so you have a right to be there. We are going to make a request that from now on if you are not with one of the main executive TILT members to show your member card for your discounts (10% at the Waterside Bistro and Surefoot). You paid for this privilege... let's keep it from being abused by other clubs or non members... show your card. Paul at Surefoot has our member list for those of you who do not have a card yet. We have new member cards ready to be signed so please when your out with us the next time ask for your card. Renewed members use last years card soon we will have 2002 stickers to validate your card for this season.

For those of you marshalling on Sunday remember it's an early start don't be late. Again here is the info from Dan at TISC.

1] Our HQ will be the TISC/TILT booth at the Health & Fitness Expo which is located in the same place as last year - on the grassy area between the Band shell and the Horticultural Bldg at the west end of the CNE grounds. Look for the white tent/booths. This is where you will pick up your Ambassador T-shirt and rendezvous with the others. You can leave your stuff [shoes, après-skate clothes, etc.] there too.

2] The inline skate portion of the event will be starting at 7:45am this year - a bit earlier than previous years - so we need all Ambassadors skated up and ready to go by
7:30am  AT THE LATEST!

This coming Monday (June 3) Kathy will be hosting a TILT table at the Bike Week Event being held during the lunch hour at Nathan Phillips Square. If you have time or you're in the area pop over and say hi. Kathy could use some help so if you're interested e-mail me and let me know.

That's it for now. See you all Sunday at the Ride For Heart.

Ciao!

News for May 22, 2002

It was very chilly last Sunday. But we skated anyway braving the wind chill and the hail... yes hail. I think it's time for some normal temps.

Anyone out there interested in volunteering to marshal the Becel Ride For Heart Skate Event coming up on Sunday morning June 2, 2002 ? We could still use more volunteers. If you are interested please let me know (e-mail me or talk to me this Sunday) by the end of next week. You should be an intermediate skater or better.

The Philly Freedom Skate is coming up fast! Talk to us... this is the primo skate event of the year! Don't miss out on the fun. For more details click on the button below...

Also if your interested check out the Empire skate weekend in NYC first weekend in June... our friends south of the border really know how to have a good time - check out their site click on the button below...

We are still looking for people to help run the Wednesday night skate. We need skate leaders and route planners. Don't be shy!

That's it for now. See you all Sunday.

News for May 10, 2002

Just a quick note this week. Our Sunday skate will still run as always however it will be unsupervised. Most of the staff this week is either in Ottawa for the Marathon or celebrating with Mom (and that's a good thing). If you want to skate you may find other members of the group at 11 AM at the Waterside to join up with and skate to whatever destination you choose.

We have a winner of the brand new pair of Salomon skates a new member Karen P. Congrats Karen enjoy the skates! Lots more stuff to give away but remember you have to show to win. We should have a little something to give away every week so come out and join us who knows maybe you'll get lucky!

Check out Sunday Skates we now have info on the Friday and Wednesday Skates.

Remember Philly is coming up quick. If you are interested let us know. We have some rooms booked at a good rate... but they are going quickly.

Have a great weekend and we will see you all next week.

Ciao!

News for May 2, 2002

Obviously last Sunday was rained and winded out... even without the rain the wind would have made it pretty tough going... but whoa think of the tail wind!

So our draw for the skates still has not happened (we will give it another try this Sunday). Hopefully the weather will be in our favour and we will get a chance to roll.

Not much to report this week. However we have been invited to sit on the Toronto Cycling Committee and represent in-line skaters in the city of Toronto. I may take the position up myself time permitting. But that may not be possible. If anyone out there is interested (you must be a competent skater and cyclist) in sitting on the committee (it will require sitting on a sub-committee as well - probably 2 meetings a month) e-mail me.

There is also an opportunity to have a table at the upcoming Bike Week Event Monday June 3 at Nathan Phillips Square. This would be an amazing opportunity to expose ourselves to a very large group of skaters and potential skaters. But this is at noon during a work day... a little difficult to set up without taking time off work. Any volunteers? If you're interested in manning a table let me know (I'm sure our sponsors would love us to death if we could pull it off).

Not too much interest so far in the Wednesday night skate. Only one person has responded so far. I know there are more of you out there so please let us know.

No final take on sponsors yet. We will keep you posted.

The Ottawa Marathon is coming up on May 11th. A few of us are trying to train (weather permitting!) for it. If you are interested in going let us know soon... it's coming up fast.

Well that's about all for now. Pray for sun and some HEAT! And don't forget to check the Infoline in case we have to cancel (again) due to bad weather.

See you all on Sunday!

Ciao!

News for April 25, 2002

Well despite the cold weather we had a reasonable turn out last Sunday. Thanks to everyone who came out to play (we certainly know who the diehards are don't we!). It was good to see all the The turnout was small enough that we postponed the draw for the skates until this Sunday. We would like to give as many people a chance to win as possible. All those who attended last Sunday will be automatically entered into the draw to win whether your are able to show up or not. Everyone else... you must show to win! I checked the forecast this morning and it doesn't look great for Sunday (always check the Infoline for last minute cancellations due to inclement weather) so who knows we may end up postponing again (lucky for you stragglers!).

Some of you have been asking about the Wednesday night skate. It's coming soon (sometime in May). If you are interested in joining the Wednesday night skate (intermediate to advanced only) please e-mail me so we can gage possible attendance numbers and plan routes accordingly.

Thanks to our two members who offered to help in the accounting area and the one member who offered to help out in event planning and organization and another who will help establish a contact with our local Police force (because this newsletter is now public domain I won't be mentioning member names)... your time and skills will be greatly appreciated. But we still need people to help out in other key areas. Don't be shy jump in! There's lots for everybody to do.

As soon as we finalize all of our sponsors we will be able to produce the TILT t-shirt. So far we have created relationships with Salomon, Transcontinental, Surefoot and Que-Net Media. We are still working on VOLVO Canada, ROOTS Canada and a few more. If you can think of any connection you may have that would lead to sponsorship (the minimum is $250.) please e-mail me so we can push these opportunities forward.

That's it for now, hope to see you this Sunday!

News for April 14, 2002

We have just been able to confirm two new major sponsors. Salomon has decided to join us with an initial offering of $1000.00 worth of product (this will mean lots of serious product to give away to you the members). Ron Wolch our Salomon contact is now taking our proposal to his marketing department for further review. keep your fingers crossed.

We are hoping their marketing department will see the value in a financial investment as well as product. All in all this is a perfect merger for us. And... my good friends and work colleagues at Transcontinental/Yorkville Printing have seen fit to donate a $1000.00 to our cause. Unlike Salomon they have nothing to gain with this donation so I was very touched by their generosity. Don't forget to visit us at our booth during High Park's Fun In The Summer Event April 18. That's at the The Lithuanian Centre, 1573 Bloor Street West,Toronto. 7 PM to 10 PM.

And our inaugural skate is set for next Sunday same time as usual and this year we are giving away a pair of Salomon X-TR skates worth approx. $265.00!

So don't miss out come and sign up with us at the High Park event this Thursday or come out and sign up at the inaugural skate. Remember you have to be a member to win and you have to show up at the Inaugural skate. The draw will be held after brunch. See you there!

Richard

Welcome back everyone!  March 29, 2002

Hope everybody stayed in shape over the winter. We have a jam packed season coming up so get your skates out, clean up those bearings and get ready to roll. If you need new equipment please check out our sponsor Surefoot at 2741 Yonge Street (just north of Sporting Life). Paul will get you fixed up with equipment at a discounted club price (minimum 10%).They are good people who believe in what we are doing so please lets support them with our purchases where possible.

The big push this year will be to secure club sponsors. We are presently talking to Nike/Bauer, Salomon/Adidas, Surefoot, Powerbar and Volkswagen. We are offering various levels of sponsorship according to financial contribution. The objective this year will be to raise $3,700. We will need this capital to grow and establish a secure base of operation for TILT in 2002. We plan on producing a host of marketing materials including banners, posters, T-shirts (yes finally T-shirts!), membership cards, flyers and handouts. Last year some of the executive committee funded the operation of the club from their own pockets - understandably we would like to avoid that this year. But at the same time we need to provide our members with more value for their membership. So we have increased the number of events this year, created a membership bag with a T-shirt, sponsor product, a water bottle and raffle tickets for a skate related prize to be given away at our inaugural skate on April 21 and most important more skating!! We have added a Wednesday night street skate and a Friday late night advanced street skate... now there is something for everyone.

However, all this comes at a price. We barely broke even last year (I will take you through the status of the TILT financials at our inaugural skate) and if you take into account the personal monies the executive committee added well... we didn't. So this year we have raised the membership fee to $35. Remember this is not a free club. TILT was designed to provide it's members with added value and that comes at a cost. We are the only club in the city that provides value beyond a loosely organized skate with a couple of friends. So take some personal responsibility for the club and make it your own... invest the money and your time. We can make this the best recreational skate club in the country. The vision is there all we have to do is execute it... together!

Speaking of your time we need your talents! If you have bookkeeping - accounting or legal experience, web design or event organizational skills, Graphic design - page layout skills e-mail me at tiltmail@sympatico.ca (Please note this is our new e-mail address)

Ciao!
