Utah: A top 10 academic state
Note: It stands to reason that if Utah students lead the USA in
education, than so do its teachers and teacher education colleges.
Dr. David E. Nelson, director of evaluation and assessment for the Utah State
Office of Education, published a report about multi-year academic performance
trends for Utah and the nation (USA). The report summary is:
Over the period from 1988-1995, Utah composite ACT scores have improved
substantially, while national scores are unchanged. Utah outscores the
nation in every area of the ACT. (Source: American College Testing
Program)
Utah Standard Achievement Test total scores generally improved between 1990
and 1995. Mathematics and science performance are very strong over time,
while English has shown recent improvement. (Source: Utah State Office
of Education, Utah Statewide Testing Program)
Results from 1992 and 1994 are available for National Assessment. These
findings show Utah scores much higher than the nation in both mathematics
and reading and in the top 10 states in most comparisons. (Source:
The State-by-State National Assessment of Educational Progress)
Between 1982 and 1995, the performance of Utah students on Advanced
Placement examinations has improved dramatically, while the nation has
declined. Utah is first in the nation in examinations taken and passed
per capita. (Source: The College Board)
