Web Enterprise Development

  • PHP - A powerful programming language for developing enterprise web applications. Many possibilities here, including database server connectivity. Best of all, it's free!
  • MySQL - A great database application. You can create your own relational database, then use PHP to build apps to insert and retrieve data.
  • Apache - A must-have web server for enterprise development. Another freebie.
  • Linux - You may or may not have already heard about Linux. If you haven't, then you likely will soon. It's an operating system, like Windows is an operating system. But the two are a bit different from each other. The big advantage of Linux is that the core kernel is free (compare that to Windows). Because of this, it is gaining in popularity throughout the world.

Science

  • Perkins Observatory Delaware Ohio
  • Big Ear - A SETI and universe-mapping radio obervatory designed and built by the late Dr. John Kraus. This was the observatory that detected the "WOW" signal in 1977 which was widely thought to be created by an intelligent extraterrestrial source. Unfortunately, the Big Ear is no longer around. It was bulldozed in the late 1990s to make way for a golf course and housing development. It's too bad, because the Big Ear was one-of-a-kind, unlike the golf course and subdivision that replaced it. I was fortunate enough to see Big Ear a few times, including one last time before it was torn down. I have the pleasure of owning Dr. John Krauss' book Big Ear Two, which I have read a few times, as it is a very interesting book. This is a good web site and I'm quite glad (and pleasantly surprised) that it is still operating, even though Big Ear is long gone.
