Alwoodley Chess Club won the 1998 National Minor Club Championship with victories over many different teams across the country. Congratulations go to the team, Hugh Thorton, Mike Dow, Stuart Johnson, John Frankland and Mike Oldham and to the reserves Jon Sharp and Gordon Pierce for their sterling efforts and excellent results.
The players were all awarded with a share of the prize fund and the club gained a demonstration set and trophy.
The league season is now underway and we are again running three five-man teams in the Leeds Evening League.
We also are playing one team in the Leeds Mini League captained by Stuart Johnson.
This season we have an eight-man team in the Silver Rook (Yorkshire's third division), organised by Mike Dow and Werner Goerke.
