Check www.microsoft.com first for multi-language support downloadable software (of CD extras) for your type and version of Windows, if you don't have any. E.g., for Windows95 that information could be at www.microsoft.com/opentype/multilang/default.htm, and downloadable files could be at www.microsoft.com/windows95/info/cdextras.htm. Download the neccesary software (it used to be self-extracting file LANG.EXE for Win95). Run it to get it unwrapped in a separate folder (directory). Normally, it should include keyboard driver(s) (like KBDRU.KBD, KBDRU1.KBD, etc.) and some fonts (.TTF - True Type Font files). Follow the instructions, specified in README.TXT text file. There are some more Microsoft free core fonts for the WEB of Microsoft Typography.
If you want Russian font as a system font for Windows95
(e.g., for naming icons on a DESKTOP), put line
System,0=System,204
under [font substitutes] to your C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI file.
If you want Russian font available as a font for Windows95
applications, (e.g., ICQ) put
line
MS Sans Serif,0=MS Sans Serif,204
under [font substitutes] to your C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI file.
Generally, likewise more fonts can be specified, if available. E.g.,
my WIN.INI file also contains the following lines under [font substitutes]:
MS Serif,0=MS Serif,204
Arial Cyr,0=Arial,204
Times New Roman Cyr,0=Times New Roman,204
etc.
To view and print Russian text your computer should have Cyrillic (Russian) fonts installed. Copy or download fonts (.TTF - True Type Font files) to a separate folder (directory), e.g. C:\NewFont, open (unzip) archives, if necessary. Go to Start /Settings /Control Panel /Fonts /File /Install New Font. Submit C:\NewFont folder (directory) with the fonts to install, select fonts, press OK. Do NOT just copy font files to C:\WINDOWS directory or any of its subdirectories (like \FONTS or \SYSTEM) !
To make your keyboard run in Russian, there should be an appropriate keyboard driver installed. Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Keyboard/ Language/Add. Add Russian language, press OK. If, after installing Russian keyboard, you are NOT satisfied with your Russian keyboard keys layout (this is not unlikely to happen, because it's from MicroSoft...) then create your own keyboard keys layout with Janko's Keyboard Generator for Windows95!
After you have installed Cyrillic fonts and keyboard driver(s) as described
above you generally will be able to use Russian in wordprocessing programs
running under Windows95.
