Introduction
Now, on to the present day. It is Christmas eve in the year AC (After Colony) 196, exactly a year after the death of World Nation leader Treize Khushrenada and the beginning of an era of peace between Earth and the space colonies. For the first time in half a century, both sides coexist peacefully under the stewardship of the newly-formed Earth Sphere Unified Nation. New Heroes
Lady Une, Lucrezia Noin and Sally Po — are now members of Preventer, the Unified Nation's intelligence agency. Sixteen-year-old Relena Darlian, following in her father's footsteps, serves as the Unified Nation's foreign minister. The five Gundam pilots, however, have returned to civilian life. Four of the five mighty Gundams, no longer needed in a world without war, have been placed in the trust of soft-hearted Quatre Raberba Winner; as the story begins, Quatre sends them on a one-way trip into the sun in indestructible war machines.
Then, the new crisis erupts. At the frontier colony of X-18999, located at the remote Lagrange Point 3, Relena is abducted during a routine diplomatic visit. Independently, Sally and Heero realize that something fishy is going on at X-18999 — something involving the corporate entity known as the Barton Foundation, and the seven year-old prodigy Mariemeia Barton who sits on its board of directors. Former Gundam pilot Trowa Barton, already on the scene thanks to his circus troupe's serendipitous touring schedule, attempts to infiltrate the ranks of the Barton Foundation's private army but is detected and captured by an unexpected defector.
Operation Meteor
Quinze turns out to be the man who coordinated Operation Meteor, commissioning the five scientists to create the mighty Gundams, which were then dispatched to Earth to strike back at the terrestrial tyrants. But when he and the scientists at last confront each other, he accuses them of subverting his plan and changing the orders given to the Gundam pilots. This begs the question of what the original plan was. In ENDLESS WALTZ, we at last find out.
To be sure, it is a little slippery of the creators to insert a new character into the back story of Operation Meteor, claiming that Quinze was but a lackey of an even more devious and mysterious villain. But once this hitherto-shadowy figure steps to the fore and explains his grand plan, many stray pieces of the puzzle fall neatly into place. And while the continuing flashbacks show how each of the Gundam pilots and their patron scientists rejected the genocidal blueprint for the true Operation Meteor, the heroes fight in the present tense to prevent it from happening this time around.
All five pilots will have learned the great mysteries and watched all the maneuvering. Now all that remains is to reunite the Gundams and their pilots, and for the faithful viewers to bear witness to the epic battle they have been patiently waiting for. As expected, it is not until this final moment that all five Gundams appear on the scene. Though there is a hefty helping of heavy metal head-banging, the combination of force, persuasion, and courageous self-sacrifice is what ultimately resolves the crisis. Even bloody-minded Heero learns from Relena's example that sometimes the best way to win a battle is not to fight. And rather than derailing the human race's newfound striving for universal peace, the events of ENDLESS WALTZ ultimately spur the characters to make their commitment to peace a total and irreversible one. |
